Year 8

Year 8 Case Study Report

Here is some information to help you!

Why has Farming Changed?

 Security of food production
British farming declined during the period 1870 to 1939 and the countryside was largely neglected and uncared for.
During and after the Second World War, there was a need for the UK to become
more self-sufficient in food stuffs.
Efforts were made to increase the amount of land under production and
to improve crop yields.

Mechanization
Since the 1940s, the use of machinery on farms has increased enormously.
Farm machinery is now bigger and much more effective.
Fewer people are now needed to farm the land, because much of the work is done by machines.
Mechanization has also changed the layout of farms.

Farm tracks have been improved  so that large combined harvesters  and other machinery can use them.

Hedges have been removed to enlarge fields so that they can be farmed more efficiently.

EU membership
In 1973, the UK joined the EU (European Union). The idea was for European countries to work together to achieve economic development.
All EU members are subject to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which regulates farming in the EU.
The CAP gives subsidies to some farmers to increase production, and imposes quotas on others to limit production.
Supermarkets
The growth of supermarkets has had a major influence on British Farmers.
Why Diversify?
Diversification means branching out into activities other than growing crops and rearing animals.
One reason for diversification is the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The CAP pays farmers to 'set aside' land (they are not allowed to use this land for agriculture but they can use it for other activities such as tourism).
Another reason is that food scares have shown that it is dangerous to rely on only one product.
The BSE scare in the 1990's bankrupted many beef farmers.
The foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 also hit farmers badly.
So what has Farmer Ted done to diversify?
READ THE LEVELS ON YOUR SHEET CAREFULLY!
This is a levelled assessment so try your best!

Success criteria sheet - you need to use this to make sure you are meeting the criteria for each level

Assessment: Why Did Farmer Ted Diversify?

Produce a newspaper article/presentation/movie explaining why Farmer Ted needed to change his business in order for it to survive. Diversify or die!
Include:
1.             An interesting, eye-catching headline
2.             A map and description of the farm and its location
3.             The reasons Farmer Ted changed his business to include a number of tourist attractions
4.             Information about the attractions, what they do, what events are held and when
5.             Include if you think it has been successful.

The article also needs to include images/drawings
You could include an interview with the farmer or a tourist who has been to one of the attractions. BE CREATIVE!

I can statements:
 Level 4:
Identify some factors about why diversification was essential
Describe some features of the attraction
Use some geographical words.

Level 5:
Identify in detail the reasons for diversification
Describe in detail the attractions, who they are aimed at and what happens there throughout the year.
Good use of geographical words.

Level 6:
 Complete all of level 5
Describe and explain how the changes to farming affected the farmer’s decision to diversify and include your own opinions about its success
Use key geographical words and a variety of presentation methods

Level 7:
Include conclusions which link the problems to the solutions
Include detailed research and statistics to support your opinions of its success

Let's produce a piece of work to be proud of.
Go for your target grade and do your very best!

Good Luck!

Welcome Year 8 Geographers!

We've got an exciting year ahead with lots of incredible topics to study!
Good luck!

Year Eight Geography Assessment Revision List

Section 1; Modern Industry
  • Be able to name and describe the jobs done in the different sectors of industry
  • Understand how the jobs that people are most likely to do has changed over the last 200 years
  • Be able to explain what may happen to industry in the future
  • How has farming changed through time?
Section 2; Environments in danger
  • Learn a case study example of an environemtn in danger which you studied in class
  • Understand ways in which we are made aware of and encouraged to protect and preserve these environments
Section 3; Extreme Weather
  • The water/hydrological cycle and all of the processes taking place therein
  • How does it rain?
  • Learn a case study example of an extreme weather event which you studied in class why it happened and what the effects were.
Section 4; BRIC
  • Know what BRIC stands for
  • Be able to give factual information about one or more of these countries.
Well done with your revision. Good luck in your assessment

Mrs Williams

Welcome Year 8 Geographers

Extreme Weather

Homework over half term...

Create a presentation for a case study of an extreme weather event.
Choose either a wildfire or a tornado!

Here's what you need to include:
When and where it occurred (include a map), labelled if possible
Why it happened (cause), think about the work we have done in class
The effects of the event, both primary and secondary
The response to the event

You may want to include some images!

Threatened Environments

Galapagos conservationists use poison to fight invading rats

Conservationists working in the Galapagos Islands have started spreading rat poison over parts of the island of Pinzon.
They hope to kill off the rodents which are known to destroy the eggs of the archipelago's native giant tortoises.

Did you watch Galapagos 3D with David Attenborough - Sky1 HD? If not, try to catch it!

Resources and the Environment

Endangered Species Presentations

You need to include:

  • The name of your chosen species and an image of it
  • Where it lives (include at least one map)
  • Why it is endangered
  • Interesting facts, including estimated numbers left
  • What is being done to help
It needs to be about 5 minutes long so think about timing and presentation skills.

8.2 BP Oil Spill Homework 18/09/12
Needs to be completed by Monday 24/09/12

Click on the link below and follow the instructions to add your interesting fact about the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill of 2010

Don't forget to add your name!

Miss Richmond :-)

The topic we are starting with is 'Industry' and you will find lots of useful information on this page.

We are completing our 'Jobs of the Future' piece of work!
Here are some ideas...

Powered exoskeleton engineer: Designs wearable robots that assist and protect soldiers, construction and rescue workers or other people working in dangerous environments.

Avatar design-security consultant: Designs, creates and protects the virtual you.

Cloud controller: Buys the planet time – maybe 25 years – in the fight against climate change, by increasing the ability of clouds to reflect solar radiation.

Personal bot mechanic: Domestic assistants will work 24/7, but will still need the occasional tune-up.

Miss Richmond's personal favourite:

Space tour guide: With Virgin Galactic planning commercial flights from 2011, space tourists will need cosmic enthusiasts to shed light on all that darkness.
